Councillor Margaret Meling

Councillor Margaret Meling is a long-standing elected member with a political career going back to 1973. She was instrumental in the setting up of South Tyneside Women’s Aid supporting women fleeing domestic violence.

Councillor Meling stood as member for the Cleadon and East Boldon Ward from 2013-18.   
 
Following a bi-election Councillor Meling represented the Monkton Ward from 2021-23. 
  
In May 2023 Councillor Meling successfully stood as Labour and Co-operative party candidate for the Monkton Ward.  Councillor Meling was also appointed as Cabinet Member for Economic Growth and Transport. 
 
As part of this portfolio Councillor Meling is a substitute member for the North East Mayoral Combined Authority.
