Karen has lived in North Tyneside since the age of three years and is passionate about the borough and its people.  
 
She is committed to tackling poverty and inequalities and has dedicated the past 35 years, personally and professionally towards this goal. She has a background in teaching, training, community research and grass roots community development, working in varied contexts including international work, predominantly in the third sector.  
 
Karen has in depth knowledge and experience of work with people in low-income neighbourhoods, using active engagement methodologies to develop bespoke interventions grounded in lived experience to influence positive change. 

As Cabinet Member, Karen introduced the highly acclaimed Working Well Employability Hub pilot model in North Shields, which has been rolled out across North Tyneside.  
 
Current roles include: 

  • Chair of North Tyneside Health & Well Being Board  
  • Chair of North Tyneside Community Safety Partnership Board  
  • Co- founding Director and Chief Officer of Justice Prince Community Interest Company (CIC), set up in 2007 to tackle poverty, inequalities and social injustice. Developed numerous models of best practise. Justice Prince CIC was awarded the Queens Award for Voluntary Service in 2018.
